An Essex Quaker’s Wife: Mary Farmer and her daughters

Julie Miller

Julie Miller will be talking about the family of John Farmer, a Saffron Walden based Quaker who went to America in 1711 to preach to the Native Americans.  He left behind his wife Mary, an independent woman, nurse, Quaker preacher and prophetess who travelled thousands of miles in her own right, spreading the Quaker message as well as bringing up her two daughters.

From her birth into a large Quaker family, her tragic first marriage, squabbling relatives and her second husband John who left his family behind to follow his own religious adventure, Mary Farmer’s story is remarkable, she even records being chased by pirates.
