Assassin’s Creed is one of the most popular game series of the present day – but can it teach history? Ubisoft has turned Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla into an educational tool called Discovery Tour: Viking Age. The game strips Valhalla of all its blood and gore and attempts to harness the research of many of its academic consultants to teach pupils the history of the Norse and the Anglo-Saxons in the early medieval period – all through the immersive experience of a video game. Using firsthand experience of implementing the Viking Age in a history curriculum, historian Steven Bishop will appraise how effectively a video game can be used for teaching secondary school pupils.
