Chelmsford Star: A Democratically-Owned Local Society

The talk starts with the foundation  of the Chelmsford Star Co-operative Society from its foundation in a small agricultural town in 1867 in an area, which was not naturally sympathetic to the left of centre views of the Co-operative Movement. Chelmsford was, however to prove to be fertile soil for the development of a locally owned democratically controlled co-operative society. There is an interesting journey from 1867 to to-day’s society, one of few remaining independent societies, as we see it represented by a major department store in the heart of the vibrant City of Chelmsford.
