Thomas Paine has long been remembered in the story of the American Revolution as the man who lit the touch paper for the thirteen colonies to fight for their independence against Britain and eventually become the United States of America. Ironically, Paine himself was an Englishman born and raised in East Anglia! In this talk, we will use Thomas Paine’s statue in Thetford as a lens to take a whistle-stop tour through colonial American history from the moment the Mayflower touched down in New England, to the events leading up to the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Along the way we will explore how East Anglians played a particularly pivotal role in the formation of the USA.
