The Second Boer (1898-1902) also known as the Anglo-Boer War or South Africa War was fought between the British Empire and the free Afrikaner states of the Transvaal Republic, and Orange Free State. In this talk, Ryan will outline the causes, chronology and outcomes of the conflict. Particular focus will be given on the tactics used by both sides during the war, including the infamous ‘Scorched Earth’ strategy used by the British Army and the guerrilla tactics used by the Boer commandos. Finally, Ryan will reflect on the legacy of the conflict in both South Africa and the United Kingdom and in particular it’s political and cultural significance.
